Extra care has to be taken with children entering secondary school since South Africa has such a high “school dropout” rate, largely in part due to substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, caring for younger siblings, and general loss of hope. Also, many parents are illiterate and unable to assist their children in an educational capacity. Plettenberg Bay Secondary School is the main school which Born In Africa children attend, once they have completed their primary school education. For this reason, then, we have two mentors at Plett Secondary for frequent monitoring and support.
