Our Charlotte comes from the Griekwa community of Kranshoek and is one of 5 siblings. She graduated from Wittedrift High school and was very ready to embark on her dream career, that of nursing.

Jonica Booysen is truly one of our miracle students. Given the minimum amount of cards life has dealt this young lady, she has truly purposefully altered the course of her life.

Micail Booysen has always been one of our very dedicated students. She was awarded a bursary to attend Wittedrift High where she obtained excellent results, gaining her entrance to Varsity College in Cape Town where she commenced in 2021 as first year Bachelor of Arts student.

Anesipho is a bit of an exemption to the rules at Born in Africa, as she only entered the program in grade 12, her last year of secondary school.

Regi, as he is fondly known, was a student at Wittedrift High when he became a part of Born in Africa. His points were excellent and his school attitude showed he was passionate and determined to do well.

Marcell Patterson, or Patty as we have fondly grown to know him comes from the Kranshoek community just outside Plettenberg Bay.

Bongani Mdlazi grew up in Kurland Village, The Crags. He formed a family at the Grace house Safehouse, and he joined Born in Africa while still at primary school.

Michaela Whaites is a very passionate and motivated young lady whose favourite subjects in high school were physical science and accounting.

Ragne grew up in the community of Kranshoek with her mom and dad, but after the sudden death of her dad, her mom and grandma played very important roles in her life.

Hi everyone. My name is Jo-Ann Mapondo. I finished matric at Wittedrift High School in 2021. After that, I started studying Educare at Varsity College in P.E.

Ellen was born to excel in the sports world. This has always been evident in her excellent performance on the track/field and in the water.

This young lady grew up with her mom in Kurland village, The Crags and has been in Born in Africa since grade 1. Ever since she was in primary school herself, Kelsey had the desire to be a teacher because her role model is Juffrou Koeberg, grade 1 teacher at The Crags primary.

Tertiary student since 2019, Rohlene Jansen, is a real go- getter. Growing up in Kranshoek came with quite a few rough periods for this young lady, but she never gave up and always kept believing in her own abilities and a brighter future.

Sandy hails from the small community Kranshoek where she attended Kranshoek primary and as a young girl got selected for the Born in Africa program.

This young man is destined to succeed in his passions and what he puts his mind to. Tarric lives in a small rural community in Harkerville, about 20 miles west of Plettenberg Bay.

Hi, my name is Jay-lee Martins. I’m from Plettenberg Bay, where I live with my parents and 2 siblings. In 2022 I commenced my tertiary studies at Varsity college, located in Port Elizabeth, where I did the first semester of the Bachelor of commerce Marketing management.

My name is Matuschka Oliphant and I grew up in Kranshoek, Plettenberg bay. I went to Kranshoek Primary for seven years and then to Wittedrift High for five years, where I graduated in 2021.

Zanda Gigi was raised in Kurland Village, The Crags. She went to live with her granny when she was a little girl as her mother could not take care of her due to personal reasons.

Lorna grew up in Kurland Village with her parents, brother and sisters. Even as a child she enjoyed looking after others and helping in the household.

Nazli Majavie is a young lady who grew up in Kranshoek and was part of the Born in Africa program for many years. She always had the aspiration of becoming a lawyer one day,

Jean Pierre hails from the small community of Green Valley just outside Plettenberg Bay. He completed his schooling at Plett Secondary, a public school which services Afrikaans speaking learners from five communities around Plettenberg Bay.

Mizaan joined BIA when she was just 8 years old as a student at the Crags Primary School in Kurland Village, where she was born and raised.

Congratulations to our Roxzane who completed her tertiary studies in 2021. She was born and raised on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay in a township called Kurland Village, The Crags.

Becoming an Occupational Therapist was Roxanne’s first choice when she applied at university. Due to the university selecting students upon their merit system as well as limited seats per class, Roxanne was selected for her second study choice which is a general degree.

Our Sade, a very focused and motivated young lady who loves business world. She grew up in the Griekwa community of Kranshoek which is situated just West of Plettenberg Bay. She attended Plettenberg Bay Secondary school.

Zinzia grew up in Kurland Village, together with her mom in a little house behind granddad’s house. When her mom died unexpectedly in 2010, it came as a shock for Zinzia, but this never lessened her eagerness to go to Wittedrift High.

nelle is part of a happy family hailing from Kranshoek. She has three sisters, two of whom are in the Born in Africa programme. Danelle completed her schooling at Wittedrift High and was then accepted to study an extended LLB (Law degree) at The University of the Western Cape in Cape Town.

Judy Mintoor is a single mother from the Green Valley community. Not only was she one of our tertiary students, but she also worked at the Wittedrift Primary school as a Born in Africa Gr 1 teacher assistant for 7 years!

Hailing from Kurland Village in The Crags, Jonell has always had a passion to work with people. When she completed her eight month hospitality course through The Eden Hospitality group her calling became clear; she wanted to assist the ill. This dream of hers is becoming a reality.

Rosline hails from Kurland Village, The Crags. During her high school education she spent five years getting up at 4.30 am every morning to get to the bus on time.

Having struggled with academics at school, Jason really needed assistance in steering his future towards the right direction. For this reason, Born in Africa enrolled him at Damelin College in East London where he has been given the opportunity to complete a year higher certificate in Engineering studies.

Raised single handily by his father in Kranshoek, this young lad graduated at Plettenberg Bay Secondary school in 2019. Always being extremely interested in electrics since a young age, we enrolled him to study a National diploma at Damelin College in East London in 2020. The course was challenging, but Lucian enjoyed every minute of his studies.

Although netball is her highest priority, our Megan also managed to study at Varsity college in Port Elizabeth where she is completed a year course in Events Management. She loved the course and according to her, wants to be the best events planner!

This young man has never let adversity stand in his way. Raised by his single mother and never having had the opportunity to have a relationship with his biological father, he has taken it upon himself to give all his attention to his studies.

This young lady, who has a knack with a pair of scissors is doing exactly what she was born to do! She comes from Kranshoek and graduated from Plettenberg Bay Secondary school in 2019, then completed a 1-year course in hairdressing at the Total Concepts Academy in Port Elizabeth.

Verushka is the definition of a busy bee as she is always exploring and busy with all sorts of things. She grew up in Kranshoek with her mom, stepdad and sisters and ever since she was still a primary school learner at Kranshoek primary, we could see the energy and keenness to learn radiating from Verushka.

Our young lady with the pretty smile and ever positive attitude who comes from Kurland Village, The Crags seems to be following in her mother’s footsteps. Her mother is a chef at the Kurland hotel and Kay-Lynn completed a year higher certificate in Events Management which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Evana hails from Kranshoek, where she attended school at the local primary school. At a young age she was selected there to become part of Born in Africa.

Jossy, as she is fondly known, transferred to Wittedrift High from Plett Secondary after we noticed her ability in terms of commitment to really make a positive difference in her life.

Shanice grew up in Kurland Village, The Crags and was raised by her grandmother and her mother. She had a very tough childhood with many social difficulties yet this never stood in her way.

Beugene is originally from Johannesburg and spent the last days of her schooling living in Green Valley, Wittedrift. There she lives with her mother, stepfather and two siblings.

Hadley was raised by his mother single handily in Green Valley. He completed his school career attending Plett Secondary school.

Adija graduated from Wittedrift High school in 2014 and was then accepted to study her passion, teaching at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth.

Jamee- Lee hails from the community of Kranshoek and attended Wittedrift High School shortly before being sent off to George to the skills school of Van Kervel.

Tamsyn hails from the community of Kranshoek, but attended Plettenberg Bay Primary School before being sent off to George to the skills school of Van Kervel.

Alberto commenced his tertiary studies at NMMU in Port Elizabeth studying a National Diploma in Accounting in 2016. Not only does he love studying towards his dream of becoming an accountant one day but he is also a very keen cyclist and is part of the University Cycling Club.

Carey-Ann grew up in Johannesburg and moved with her family to Kranshoek.  After she graduated from Wittedrift High in 2015 she was accepted to study Culinary Arts at the very prestigious school of Francois Ferreira Culinary Academy in George.

2016 was Deidre’s first year of tertiary studies after Graduating from Wittedrift High in 2015. This young lady has high business aspirations and we look forward to supporting her every effort at making a huge success of her studies. 

Nicole hails from the community of Kranshoek, but attended Plettenbergbaai Primary School before being sent off to George to the skills school of Van Kervel. Born in Africa supported her to go there and attend boarding school as well.

This young man is destined to succeed in his passions and what he puts his mind to. Tarric lives in a small rural community in Harkerville, about 20 miles west of Plettenberg Bay.

Cameron Stuurman is a young man with a serious calling to become a doctor. He started by embarking on an EDP year in 2012 at Stellenbosch University, after not being accepted for the Bachelor of Human Science.

Tammy joined the Born in Africa programme when she was in Gr 8 and already a scholar of Wittedrift High. She was selected because of her academic excellence and her dedicated nature which enabled her to always look to the top for her goals. Tammy excelled on the sports field with Tug of War and she took ballet since her primary school days.

At the end of 2017, Mervin September graduated after completing his four year Electrical Engineering National Diploma at South Cape College (SCC) in Mossel Bay.

Denilson hails from the community of The Crags and attended the primary school there when he was little. When he was in grade 7, his parents approached Born in Africe asking for assistance as they wanted to send their son to Van Kervel High school, a skills school in George.

Zodwa Thandathu left her high school as she was not performing academically. She realised that her talents were more practically orientated.

Nursing has been Euné’s lifelong dream. She wanted to become a nurse since her primary school days. Born in Africa has ensured that her dream comes true.

Leshwin lives with his mother in a small community called Covie, situated near Natures Valley. His mother raised him and his four siblings as a single parent. This didn’t stop him from giving his best.

Renesha grew up in Green Valley in a small home with her mother Annie and father Rico. Her parents separated at a very critical part of her development as a young person and although very painful for her she completed her high school successfully.

Chandre grew up in Kurland Village in The Crags (about 20 km east of Plettenberg Bay). Chandre, her mother, stepfather and younger sister live in a small RDP house (Rural Development Programme).

After graduating at Wittedrift High in 2015, Alexis applied to study nursing at university level, however, was not accepted. This did not deter this young lady whose passion is to take care of those in need.

Nabrushca grew up in Kurland Village, The Crags. Financially she and her family have always struggled so without external support she would not have had the opportunity to further her studies. Although nursing is a career which she always wanted to pursue, she attended the campus in Karatara to obtain a higher certificate in Office Administration.

Angelo is from Kranshoek where he was raised by his mother and father. He always loved the ocean and subsequently graduated as a Plettenberg Bay Life Guard.

Cheston lives in Kranshoek and was raised by his grandmother. He is a young man with a dream and a vision to succeed. After graduating from Plett Secondary school in 2015 Cheston realised that he needed to streamline his computer skills and mathematics.

Kabelo lives in Kranshoek with his four siblings, mother and father. His older brother Katleho also studied through the Born in Africa programme.

atleho has always been a young man with a vision. After he graduated from Plett Secondary he was not accepted at university level to study architecture.

Suleiman is from Kurland Village, The Crags. He grew up in very tough circumstances without his parents but luckily his aunt took care of him.

Our Courtney hails from the small community of Kurland Village, The Crags. She tragically lost her mother and is being raised single handily by her father who is doing a terrific job given the circumstances.

Suwaida Grootboom hails from Kurland Village, The Crags. She completed her three year diploma at South Cape College in George in Educare.

Asanda Gigi has been a part of the Born in Africa program since her primary school days when she was in Gr 5. She graduated from high school and after taking some time to decide which career path to follow, she chose to enter the security industry.

Charné’s dream has always been to study Physiotherapy. This is largely due to the fact that her younger sister Ayesha suffers from Spinal Bifida, as well as Charné’s has a passion to help people. Her dream came true at the end of 2016 when she graduated from the University of the Western Cape with her Honours degree in Physiotherapy.

Donnoline Aaron joined the Born in Africa programme when she was still a scholar at Kranshoek Primary in 2006. Raised by her parents Donovan and Elizabeth, she performed very well at primary school both academically as well as on the sports field.

Siya, as she is fondly known, grew up in Plettenberg Bay.  Sadly her father passed away when she was a young girl.  Her mother, a teacher, raised her and her young sister single handedly.  

uduwaan completed his four year degree in 2016 at the University of the Western Cape with a Bachelor in Teaching. It is his dream to return to his community and teach at a school there. He also wants to inspire the youth in his community to step out of their comfort zone and reach for their dreams.

Jo-Anne grew up with tough circumstances. She was raised by her aunt as her mother was not in a position to take care of her.

Merilene Hartley joined the Born in Africa programme when she was at Kranshoek Primary. She is one of five siblings raised by a single mother.

Candy Gadebe joined Born in Africa when she was 14 years old whilst attending Harkerville Primary. Candy continued to complete her schooling at Wittedrift High and then graduated at Tsiba Eden Campus with a Higher Certificate in Business Administration.

Mandy Mngomezulu joined the Born in Africa programme in 2009 when she was a Gr 8 scholar at Wittedrift High. She commenced her tertiary education at the University of the Western Cape and completed a three year BA degree majoring in Liguistics.

Shenise Stuurman hails from Kranshoek where she also went to primary school. She went on to Plett Secondary and then completed a three year diploma in Business Management at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in George.

Abygail Links joined the Born in Africa programme in 2005!. She was 15 at the time and looking back at all she has achieved since joining the programme she really is a unique success story.

Ashby Prins joined the Born in Africa programme in 2004. She was one of the first students who entered our tertiary study bursary programme. Ashby grew up in Kurland Village, The Crags and always aspired to be a fashion designer as she loved paging through the international glamour magazines.

Thanks to the Born in Africa programme Berna-lee Evertse’s life has taken the right direction. In her own words. this is how it happened.

It has always been Brandon’s dream to work in the construction sector which is why he studied a Diploma in Building at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth.

Clinton Brits was selected as a Born in Africa student in 2005 when he was only 10 years old. Clinton has had to endure a very challenging life due to alcohol abuse by both his parents.

Donovan was thirteen years old when Isabelle selected him for the Born in Africa programme in 2003. He was a student at Harkerville Primary which is a very small rural school situated in the forests of Harkerville. Donovan was one of the first 40 children selected on the Born in Africa programme.

Edwill Mabie is a true ambassador for the Born in Africa programme.

Looking at Edwill’s somewhat gloomy history, one can only praise him for his success at this stage of his life.

Elicia Wiesie has been a part of Born in Africa for the past eight years and it was such a pleasure to see this young lady grow and develop into the strong young woman she has become.

Freddie Scheepers is a young man with the motivation to succeed. He joined the Born in Africa programme in 2006. He comes from a severe impoverished family situation, yet has always had the motivation to rise above these circumstances.

Gino is a young man who lives with his mother and brother in Kranshoek. He comes from a family of six children. His mother is unemployed and suffers from a severe form of asthma, for which she receives a small disability allowance.

Henny Mintoor is a young man with a tragic beginning in life. He joined the Born in Africa programme in 2005 as the godchild of Olympic gold medalist Tia Hellebaut.

uventis lives in Kurland Village, The Crags with his parents and his sister Megan. His mother works three days a week as a maid and his father is unemployed.

This young lady comes from Kurland Village, The Crags where she lives with her mother and two sisters. She has no contact with her biological father. Her younger sister is in Crags Primary School.

Samantha is a 1st year student at South Cape College in George. She is following a three year Office Administration course as she is very interested in entering the business world once she has graduated.

Shavon Prins comes from Kurland Village in The Crags. She completed a year at the International Hotel School Cape Town in Hospitality Management. Since she was a little girl, Shavon has played “hotel” at home as it has been her passion.
